Frequently Asked Questions

This isn’t just a box. It’s a place for a collar, a letter, a favorite toy, a blanket — even a folded flag. A safe space for memory, for grief, for meaning. Each one is crafted from solid hardwood, joined by hand, and finished to last for generations — because what you’re saving inside deserves nothing less.

What makes your boxes “heirloom quality”?

We use solid, furniture-grade hardwoods, such as American walnut, cherry, hard maple, and white oak. No plywood, no veneers. Each piece is handcrafted in our studio with time-honored joinery (like mitered corners with cherry or maple splines) and finished with multiple coats of satin protective finish. These are built to be passed down.

Are your boxes mass-produced?

No. Every box is made by hand, one at a time, by our small team in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia. We don’t batch or outsource our work. Every spline, every lid, every engraving is done in-house with care, precision, and pride.

What are your boxes used for?

Our customers use them to hold:

  • Memorial items (like ashes, photos, dog tags, or collars)
  • Anniversary or wedding keepsakes
  • Letters, journals, or love notes
  • Baby mementos and childhood treasures
  • Retirement gifts and time capsules

We’ve even made boxes for presidential gifts and military honors. Each one has a story.

Why are your prices higher than some other shops?

We aren’t competing with mass-produced or laser-cut plywood boxes. Our pricing reflects the real cost of premium materials, handcrafted joinery, and personal engraving. Each box includes hours of skilled work and years of experience — not shortcuts. If you’re trusting this box to hold something precious, it deserves to be made to last.

Can I personalize my box?

Yes. Every box or urn includes free engraving. You may add names, dates, quotes, coordinates, photos, designs, or meaningful phrases. Some customers even email us drawings or handwriting to be engraved. We’ll help you tell your story.

Engraving proofs: Each order includes up to two engraving proof rounds. A proof is a digital mockup showing engraving layout, text, font, and placement for approval prior to engraving. Multiple engraving locations shown together (for example, the top and inside lid) as part of the same design round count as one proof.

If additional design rounds are needed beyond the two included, we’ll send you a direct website link to purchase additional engraving proofs at that time.

Do you offer interior trays, locks, felt lining, or other upgrades?

Yes! Box options, such as interior trays and locks, can be selected directly from the box options dropdown before adding your item to the cart.

Additional upgrades — including felt lining — may be added after your order is placed. Once your order is received, we’ll send you a direct website link to complete any add-on upgrades.

Felt lining options:

  • Felt lining for box bottom — $15
  • Felt lining for tray bottom — $10 per tray

Do you offer rush orders or expedited shipping?

Yes. Faster options are available directly at checkout, depending on how quickly you need your order:

  • UPS Ground with priority production — includes a rush handling fee to move your order through production sooner, while shipping via standard ground transit.
  • UPS Air with priority production — includes both rush handling and expedited shipping for the fastest possible delivery.

If an order has already been placed and a specific need-by date arises afterward, we may be able to accommodate it, depending on timing and current workload. In those cases, a Rush My Order + Shipping Upgrade may be required. If approved, we’ll send you a direct website link to complete the rush and shipping upgrade.

Please note: Rush handling and expedited shipping are applied once payment for those services is received. Delivery dates shown at checkout are estimates that depend on carrier performance.

If you’re unsure which option is best for your order, feel free to email us at christy@madtreewoodcrafts.com — we’re happy to help guide you.
